Associate Professor Catherine Sinclair is a neck endocrine surgeon and laryngologist with a double background.She graduated from Flinders University School of Medicine in Australia with the Dean’s Prize in Medicine, the Staff Prize in Surgery, and the Australia Medical Association (SA) Medal. She later received the Gordon-Gordon Taylor Medal and the Clinical Committee Award from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons during her basic surgical training. She completed her training in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery in Melbourne, Australia, before traveling to the United States for fellowships in Head and Neck Surgery and Laryngology. Between 2010 and 2021, she worked in New York, where she served as the Director of the Head and Neck Surgery Division at Mount Sinai West Hospital. She relocated to Australia in early 2021.
Prof. Sinclair is an internationally recognized expert in surgical and non-surgical management of endocrine diseases of the neck. She was among the first to adopt radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of benign thyroid nodules. In August 2019, she performed the first radiofrequency ablation for a benign thyroid nodule in New York, and in April 2021, she performed the first radiofrequency ablation in Australia.
Additionally, she has developed and implemented a new methodology for continuous intraoperative neuromonitoring of the laryngeal and vagus recurrent nerves, which is beginning to be used worldwide in both neck endocrine and neurosurgical procedures.Dr. Sinclair is the author of numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and she has served as a guest editor for several journals on topics related to thermal ablation, thyroid cancer, environmental exposures, and neuromonitoring.She is the current Editor-in-Chief of VideoEndocrinology, one of the three official journals of the American Thyroid Association, and is an active member of many international committees, including the Guidelines and Statements Committee of the American Thyroid Association, the Executive Committee of the Endocrine Section of the American Head and Neck Society, and the Executive Committee of the Asia Pacific Society of Thyroid Surgery.
